San Francisco

In 1970, at 17 years old, I joined the US Navy and, after boot camp, was sent to electronics school at Treasure Island in San Francisco where I spent a year as both a student and instructor. I went on many photo expeditions downtown during that time and, since Treasure Island didn’t have a darkroom, I would take a 45 minute bus ride to the Presideo Army Base and use their darkroom. I was back in San Francisco again in 1977 when I was discharged and again visited San Francisco on photo expeditions in 1991, 1992, 1996, and 2001. Interestingly, in 1989 I also flew out to SF on a business trip where I planned several extra days for a photo expedition, but the plane was diverted to San Jose as the city was hit by the 7.2 magnitude earth quake shortly before our flight arrived over the city.

Needless to say, I have a lot of film from San Francisco, so as I sift through the boxes of prints from past years, I will add more images to this gallery. As with all my galleries, these are scans of black and white darkroom prints, usually on 8″ x 10″ glossy or pearl RC paper.
